Medusa/Cai Lin is one of the main female deuteragonist of Battle through the Heavens. She is the queen of the Snake-People Tribe and Xiao Yan's first wife.
Etymology
- Her name is Cǎi Lín 彩麟,
- Medusa is Greek and means either "To Protect or Rule."(美杜莎)
- 蔡 is one of the Northern Song's hundreds official surnames. It is a surname but can also mean grass, rarely refers to fortune telling turtle shell. It is primarily used as a surname.
- 琳 is frequently used as a girl's name. When not used in a girl's name, it is a descriptive word used to describe beautiful things (Main reason why people like to use it as a girl's name)
- 彩 means Colorful, Praised, acclaimed, prized.
- 鳞 means scales. This particular word refers to Fish or reptilian scales
Cai Lin is a Prized Scales, also praised, worshiped, beautiful and even more dangerous honeytrap. While the scales is reference to her Medusa, reptilian roots.
Personality
She is very prideful and has superiority complex as she wanted other people to address her as "Your Highness" or "Queen". Medusa has a soft point towards children and admitted that humans are interesting(Only In Manhua). She didn't have much respect for Human Life before Xiao Yan. She has the traits of a Medusa (A Name meaning Snake Queen, i.e. there were various Queen Medusa before her) which is a "Medusa truly loves someone until the end once she has been subdued by him."[5] Despite the fact that Xiao Yan has taken her virginity[6], she has conflicted feeling about killing him which she acknowledges.

This was the feeling that the woman gave to others at first glance with the exception of her icy-cold face. The merging of coldness and enchantment caused her to possess an unusual allure that had a deep impact on men. In Manga, She has long crimson colored hair, pale snow white skin and golden colored eyes. She normally wears a purple color skin tight dress. Also, Yun Shan mistakes her as her daughter and is said to have a crush on her.
Plot
She first appeared during the Green Lotus Core Flame Arc; Gu He, Yun Yun and their companions came to the snake people Capital City to try and trade Pills for the Green Lotus Core Flame. She refused to trade as she wanted to use the flame to breakthrough. Xiao Yan was secretly watching as she tried to swallow the flame to advance and when he thought she had died in her attempt he came forward to take the flame and found the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python and decided to take the little fellow with him. She would not be seen in her human body till Xiao Yan returned to Wu Tan City for the Three Year Agreement. Xiao Yan was going to have the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python absorb some the excess Green Lotus Core Flame and this allowed her to come out. She wanted to kill him, but was stopped by the attachment that the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python had developed towards Xiao Yan. After this she would talk to him mentally if she wanted him to acquire something.[10][11]

She would come out again as Yun Shan tried to capture Xiao Yan during the fight at the Misty Cloud Sect . She would save Xiao Yan due to the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python allowing her to take control. Se being a Dou Zong like Yun Shan he let them go as he wasn't sure he could win in a fight with her. She followed him back to the Xiao clan compound. When they arrived, the clan was being suppressed by the Ao Ba Clan , Jia Lie Clan and Xuan Wu. Xiao Yan asked for her help and she agreed to kill people for him (Xiao Yan was able to get her to help through a medicinal ingredient she would need to refine the Soul Mending Pill / Thawing Spirit Pill). When they arrived inside the meeting hall after listening to what had been , the Ao Ba and Jie Lie clan tried to say it was a misunderstanding. When they tried to leave, Xuan Wu tried to force the issue and he was the first one she killed after this Xiao Yan said leave no one alive and she killed all the remaining enemies of the Xiao Clan. Then she accompanied Xiao Yan to Misty Cloud Sect, to help him take revenge and save his father. There, She fights with Yun Shan. But after She found out that Xiao Yan can manage by himself, she stopped intervening and observed the fight between Xiao Yan and Yun Shan. But As she fought with a Dou Zong, Yun Shan, she was suppressed again by the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python.[12][2][13][14][15]

She would come out again after Heaven Swallowing Python fight with the Snow Demon Sky Ape, which made the restriction of Heaven Swallowing Python weak on her and after once again being free she would ask Xiao Yan "You are actually really treating me as a pet to rear?". Later, She would get angry as she found out that Xiao Yan had not gathered the ingredients for the Thawing Spirit Pill that would allow her to take back control of her body. She would then decide to kill him but before she could do anything, Yao Chen came out of the ring and told she could leave if she was dissatisfied with his disciple.

Xiao Yan was comforted and calmed down by Cai Lin as Yao Lao was captured by Hall of Souls
She realized she couldn't leave due to the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python and she was stuck with Xiao Yan. She and Yao Chen came to an agreement, he will refine the Thawing Spirit Pill for her as long as she protected Xiao Yan for a year. Once they reached this agreement she turned back into the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python.[16][17] She would try numerous times to kill Xiao Yan during the Fallen Heart Arc, but she couldn't hurt him because of Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python spirit plus she has conflicting feelings in her heart. When they were trapped by Falling Heart Flame, Yao Chen would protect them till he fell into another slumber. Xiao Yan defended against the Fallen Heart Flame till he passed out and and would awaken later to refine the flame. Due to the sequela from the flame Xiao Yan would force himself on her and once it was over she would still try to kill for disgracing her body but couldn't actually do it. Xiao Yan didn't know that whoever Medusa's were intimate with would hold a place is their heart and they would give their all to that person.
During the Misty Clod Sect Destruction arc she protected Xiao Yan from Protector Wu of hall of souls. Later on she joined hands with Yao Lao's spirit to fight Protector Wu who self-destructed the elite Dou Zong, Yun Shan's spirit and using this force captures Yao Lao's spirit. She once again fought Protector Wu to free Yao Lao but failed. Later on, during Xiao Yan's retreat for Dou Huang class, Medusa was the sole Dou Zong in the Jia Ma Empire and helped them despite being injured during the fight against the three sects.[18] When She was falling into a dangerous situation, Xiao Yan appeared and lend her a hand and gave medicinal pills to recover from injuries. She then witnessed Xiao Yan fights with Three Mulan Elders and thought about the rule in Snake-People Tribe, Where Queen's Husband should possess a strength exceeding that of the Queen. This thought led her face to become slightly red which made her beauty even more bewitching. This made even the Yan Luo Tian, the one she was fighting with, to become distracted. Afterwards Medusa asked Xiao Yan to accompany her to Snake-People Tribe's location in the city to meet the Elders. She felt it was funny seeing Xiao Yan's fearful expression upon listening to the punishment he would receive from the Snake-people tribe elders for taking her virginity. But she had done her best to mediate the two parties by mentioning Xiao Yan's Alchemist status and When Mo Ba Si tries to create trouble for Xiao Yan Medusa reprimands him and uses a protective tone when talking about Xiao Yan.[19] And When Elders said that they must punish Xiao Yan for taking Virginity of Queen Medusa, Xiao Yan rebuked saying he won't just accept watch himself to be punished. Despite keeping her outside appearances she panicked when she heard that she was pregnant.[20] Elders then said that they will not intervene in matters between Xiao Yan and Medusa but told Xiao Yan that should Medusa be pregnant Xiao Yan is the father of the child and asked him to refine a medicinal pill. When she heard that Xiao Yan insisted on making a 'Heaven Soul Blood Bone Pill which is a tier 7 Pill and is the Top-grade technique in the tribe, her eyes revealed a gentleness that had never existed before as she looked at Xiao Yan.
